Graphic Novels: The Bridge Medium Between the 20th Century Classroom and the 21st Century World
Saturday, September 19 @ 9 AM

Beowulf graphic novel coversMaine educator Ian Carlson returns to BangPop! with a presentation on graphic novels in which he makes the case that comics fill a unique void between the text-heavy classroom and image-based world. It is very literacy-based, and he provides further readings and research. The Plain Janes graphic novel cover

Joining him is fellow teacher Dan Ryder who will discuss his experiences of teaching Watchmen in high school, surviving a formal book challenge, and mention how he's been able to expand their curriculum to include more and more graphic novels in recent years.

Ian Carlson is an English teacher at Lake Region High School in Naples, Maine. He has a great blog packed full of great comics and graphic novels to use as teaching tools. Check it out at teachcomics.blogspot.com!
Ian describes his blog as virtual ideas (and occasional rants) of a high school English teacher and lifelong comic book geek. The blog is primarily a collectionPride of Baghdad, Book of Ballads, Maus graphic novel covers of lesson plans and resources for educators interested in incorporating the comic medium into their classroom at any grade level or subject.

Despite his height and lack of physical prowess, Dan Ryder teaches English at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington, Maine. He has also taught courses in comics and graphic novels, young adult literature, content literacy, and differentiation at the University of Maine at Farmington. Despite a decade of working with Watchmen and teenagers, his students keep making connections that melt his brain -- in a good way.

Comic Creation: Process and Discussion
Saturday, September 19 @11 AM

Comic creators Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier talk about how they make comics, why they make comics, and the work process that goes into making different types of comics. Dave will talk about script writing while Raina will discuss drawing and working with other writers.

Dave Roman draws Astronaut Elementary, and has written several graphic novels including Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery; Jax Epoch; and The Adventures of Tymm: Alien Circus. He recently collaborated with his wife, Raina Telgemeier, on X-Men: Misfits and is an editor for Nickelodeon Magazine. www.yaytime.com
